Back to Holiness: 5 Ways to Spiritually Reset Before Fall

There’s something about the end of summer that feels like a reset. The light starts to change. The routines return. The calendar fills up.

And if we’re not careful, our spiritual lives can get lost in the shuffle.

Before fall fully begins, take this moment to pause—and reset. Because holiness isn’t about grand resolutions. It’s about returning to God, again and again, with a willing heart.

Here are 5 simple but powerful ways to spiritually reset and step into the new season with clarity and grace.

1. Begin with a Good Confession

Before anything else, clean the slate. Whether you’ve been distant from the sacraments or just need to renew your heart, confession is the most powerful reset button we’ve been given.

“God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking his mercy.”
—Pope Francis

Go this week. Don’t wait for Advent. Begin again now.

2. Reignite Your Habit of Spiritual Reading

Summer can throw off routines, including spiritual ones. If your prayer life has been inconsistent or unfocused, reintroduce spiritual reading to your daily rhythm—even just 10 minutes a day.

“Reading has made many saints.”
—St. Josemaría Escrivá, The Way, no. 116

3. Create (or Recommit to) a Prayer Routine

You don’t need to overhaul your entire day. Just choose one time and place you’ll commit to daily prayer—morning coffee, after school drop-off, or right before bed.

Build a habit that fits your life, and ask the Holy Spirit to keep drawing you in.

Bonus: Light a candle or keep a favorite prayer card or spiritual book nearby to help set the tone.

4. Offer a Spiritual Bouquet for Your Family

Before the demands of fall take over—school, sports, holidays—offer your efforts and prayers for the people you love.

Choose a few small sacrifices or devotions to “bundle” as a spiritual bouquet:

  • A morning Rosary

  • Fasting from social media one day a week

  • A novena for your spouse or children

  • Attending a daily Mass just for them

Write it down. Offer it up. Let it reframe the season ahead.

5. Let the Season Teach You Something

Nature is about to shift. The light will soften. The leaves will change. And it’s the perfect metaphor for your soul.

Ask yourself:

  • What needs to die in me so something new can grow?

  • What spiritual clutter do I need to shed?

  • What good fruit is God asking me to cultivate this fall?

Use this as a journaling prompt or bring it to prayer.

You don’t need to start over. You just need to return.

God is waiting—quietly, patiently—with mercy and strength for whatever lies ahead. Before the season shifts, choose to shift your heart first.
