Western civilization as we know it today was formed during the modern era, the centuries that include the Renaissance and the Enlightenment and saw the rise of Rationalism and Empiricism. And it is the thinkers who defined these centuries, such as Descartes, Luther, Pascal, Hobbes, Hume, and Kant, who have given form to our collective consciousness today.

The History of Modern Philosophy provides a comprehensive overview of the major philosophers and philosophical currents of this period. Authors Fazio and Gamarra, drawing on many years of university teaching, have produced a clear and approachable text that presents modern philosophy through its historical development. This work will appeal to non-specialist readers who wish to deepen their understanding of the cultural and philosophical roots of our time.

Mariano Fazio was professor of philosophy and later rector of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. He is a former president of the Council of Rectors of Pontifical Roman Universities. He has authored several books which treat modern society and the process of secularization from a philosophical point of view.   Daniel Gamarra, who died in 2015, was a professor of modern and contemporary philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina, as well as at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. Among other books, he wrote Descartes e Spinoza: sulla verità dell’idea (Descartes and Spinoza: The Truth of Ideas); Nicolás de Cusa y el acto intelectual (Nicholas of Cusa and the Intellectual Act), and Dios, Modernidad, Crisis (God, Modernity, and Crisis)
