By Michael Torre

Although a naturally intellectual subject matter, What Is gives us a unique conversational tone—what the author calls a “personal account”—to metaphysics that invests in the idea that philosophy is relatable to our “basic concerns and conversations.” Tackling the subjects of Being, Truth, God, good and evil— and other metaphysical subject matter—from the perspective of Thomas Aquinas and Catholicism, What Is inspires personal reflection and encourages the logic of Faith and Truth. As a believer that Aquinas himself had a Neoplatonic and Augustinian approach to his thought, the author confidently leads us through what can often be an abstruse topic in a comprehensive and accessible manner.

Michael Torre is an Associate Professor in the Philosophy Department at the University of San Francisco. He has been a past Vice-President of the Institut Internationale Jacques Maritain and is currently the General Editor of the American Maritain Association’s series of publications. He specializes in the Philosophy of Religion and in the figures of Plato, Aristotle, and Aquinas, as well as Contemporary Thomists. He has published on various aspects of the thought of Thomas Aquinas and especially on the problem of God’s permission of sin.
