Wholeheartedly: God's Mystery of Love in the Call to Celibacy
$ 12.95
The vocation of apostolic celibacy is a call from God to dedicate one's life entirely to the needs of the Church. In a world increasingly burdened by distraction from what matters most, this calling is all the more necessary—and all the more attractive.
Angela Fortunato enlightens the hearts and minds of her readers in this timely book about apostolic celibacy: its origins and its characteristics, certainly, but also the way this vocation has touched her life and the lives of those around her. Her words are a supportive encouragement to be open to the gentle voice of the Creator, beckoning souls to find joy and fulfillment through him.
Young or old, married or single, curious for yourself or for a friend, pick up this book—it will help you gain a better understanding of the vital importance of this vocation in the life of the Church, and how apostolic celibacy can impact your own life!
Angela Fortunato is the fourth of five children. While finishing high school and entering college, Angela encountered God in a personal way through prayer and Mass, which led her to apostolic celibacy in the midst of the world, specifically as a numerary member of Opus Dei. Angela holds a bachelor’s in biology, master’s in bioethics, and master’s in public health, in addition to certifications in aging and teaching science. She has worked in bioethics and healthcare research and as a science teacher. She is currently the Assistant Head of School of Willows Academy in the northern suburbs of Chicago.

Because Angela’s thoughts speak clearly from her heart, this beautifully written book makes a convincing case for apostolic celibacy. There is truly unabashed conviction. She shows that celibacy needs to be nurtured by a robust friendship with Christ through acts of piety done with the heart. I say this because celibacy ceases to have experiential meaning when piety becomes reduced to routine devotions and there is an absence of apostolic zeal. This timely book, written with genuine conviction and honesty, must get into the hands of both young single men and women and married people. Five stars from me!
As I read Angela Fortunato’s Wholeheartedly, one word kept popping into my mind—Joy! It is clear that this little book on apostolic celibacy was written by one who loves her vocation. And, of course, what’s not to love when one is doing God’s will?! I plan to give a copy of this book to my grandchildren when they come of age whether or not they are discerning a celibate vocation. We all need a better understanding of and appreciation for the gift of apostolic celibacy. This wonderful book will be an eye-opener for many.
As a very happily married member of Opus Dei, I have for decades been loved and cared for by a succession of fabulous women who have answered God’s call to apostolic celibacy. I have prayed often and insistently for more such women, but almost always because I saw them as essential to getting what I want, namely, the growth and spread of Opus Dei to every corner of the world. In this book, Ms. Fortunato, with generosity and courage, opens up the intimate interior world of apostolic celibacy, giving me more than a hint of what God offers to the soul who answers such a call. Our Catholic culture needs this book, enriched and enlivened by the author’s contemporary experiences, to broaden and deepen our understanding of this beautiful divine path.
