El canon del Nuevo Testamento se compone de 27 libros, escritos aproximadamente en la segunda mitad del siglo I. Pueden clasificarse de la siguiente forma: libros históricos o narrativos (los cuatro Evangelios y los Hechos de los Apóstoles), didácticos o epistolares (las trece cartas de San Pablo, la Carta a los Hebreos y las siete cartas católicas), y proféticos o de consolación (el Apocalipsis).
Todo el Nuevo Testamento nos habla de Jesucristo mostrándolo como "el Hijo de Dios hecho hombre, palabra única, perfecta e insuperable del Padre" (CCE 65). De ahí que la lectura del Nuevo Testamento sea un modo excelente de conocer a Jesucristo. Los evangelios narran "lo que Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, viviendo entre los hombres, hizo y enseñó" (C. Vat. II, Dei Verb. 19). El resto de los libros "según el sabio plan de Dios, confirman la realidad de Cristo, van explicando su doctrina auténtica, proclaman la fuerza salvadora de la obra divina de Cristo, cuentan los comienzos y difusión maravillosa de la Iglesia, predicen su consumación gloriosa" 

The New Testament canon consists of 27 books, written approximately during the second half of the first century. They can be classified as follows: historical or narrative books (the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles), didactic or epistolary books (the thirteen letters of Saint Paul, the Letter to the Hebrews, and the seven Catholic Epistles), and prophetic or consolatory books (the Apocalypse).
The entire New Testament speaks to us of Jesus Christ, presenting Him as "the Son of God made man—the Father's one, perfect, and unsurpassable Word" (CCC 65). Thus, reading the New Testament is an excellent way to come to know Jesus Christ. The Gospels recount "what Jesus, the Son of God, while living among men, did and taught" (Second Vatican Council, *Dei Verbum* 19). The remaining books, "in accordance with God's wise plan, confirm the reality of Christ, expound His authentic doctrine, proclaim the saving power of Christ's divine work, recount the beginnings and wondrous spread of the Church, and foretell its glorious consummation."
