Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, Joseph S. Reel received a degree in mathematics from MIT. He considered a religious vocation and medical school before pursuing a career in financial modeling and investments. He currently lives with his wife and children in New York City. Raised as a believer, he paid little attention to his faith as he entered adulthood. His struggles led him to a desperate prayer, which was immediately followed by a "moment in which my spirits were suddenly and inexplicably lifted higher than they had ever been before. I took this as God showing himself to me, and since then I have felt his constant presence—by his grace in my strongest moments, and in his mercy when I have failed to live up to his holy will."
