A Guide to Grateful Reading - Books that Inspire Gratitude

How important is it to be grateful?

From a Catholic perspective, gratitude is essential to human life.  One of the major characteristics of a well-rounded prayer life is that it includes thanksgiving to God- not just praise or petition.  Indeed, St. Ambrose asserts that, “No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks.”

In addition to the importance of gratitude in spirituality, gratitude is known to have an immensely positive effect on just about everyone and their quality of life- religious or not.  The myriad of psychological studies on this topic show that people who express gratitude for what they have are happier, exercise more, eat less, sleep better, are more peaceful, are more patient, have healthier relationships, and are less likely to be depressed.

But how can we do this? How can a person become more grateful?

If you’re trying to become a more thankful person, a great way to begin is with spiritual reading.

Some books to help inspire a mindset of gratitude include:

He Calls We Answer, by St. Josemaria Escriva, a book on finding peace in your vocation

The Way of Trust and Love, by Jacques Philippe, a book on living with humility as St. Therese of Lisieux did

Embracing Happiness by Francisco Ugarte, a book on living with a joyful heart

We hope that you enjoy these suggestions and that they can help you to gain an attitude of gratitude!
