Celebrating Catholic Love Stories: Valentine's Day Edition

We are officially in the month of love! Because of Valentine’s Day, February has been declared a time for reconnecting with our loved ones, embracing romance, and celebrating the beautiful gift of marriage.

Whether you’ve been married 30 years or are still looking for your special person, reflecting on the vocation of marriage is such an important practice.

St. John Chrysostom wrote,“When a husband and wife are united in marriage they no longer seem like something earthly, but rather like the image of God himself.”  We want to encourage holy marriages that honor God in this way!

For some amazing stories of love, marriage, and faith, check out these great titles:

16 Marriages That Made History

This book explores an area we usually don’t address when thinking about historical figures: their love stories.  Embark on a journey through time as author Gerard Castillo shares the real ups and downs of many historical marriages.  As the description of this book reads, “These are not fairy tales of marriages “made in heaven;” they are stories of real people with real struggles, who, through their marriage, were challenged, strengthened, and encouraged to grow in their capacity for love.”

Our Lives in His Hands: An Ordinary Couple's Path to Holiness

In this book, Olga Marlin shares the inspiring story of Tomás Alvira and his wife, Paquita. One of St. Josemaría Escrivá’s companions during the Spanish Civil War, Tomás was determined to be a part of Opus Dei, and he did so while also tending to his wife and growing family. Theirs is a story of practical, real, deep love. Their official cause for holiness is currently in progress. One reviewer wrote that this book is “ a detailed view of an ordinary couple, who lived the Christian ideal.”  You do not want to miss this incredible story!

We wish you a very happy Valentine’s Day and hope these books inspire you to show some love to your spouse or to the married couples striving for holiness in your life!
