Los libros históricos del Antiguo Testamento narran los avatares del pueblo de Israel desde la conquista de la Tierra Prometida en adelante. Los libros comprendidos entre Josué y Reyes llevan el relato hasta el momento en que el reino independiente de Judá fue destruido por invasores extranjeros y gran parte de la población fue deportada a Babilonia. Se trata de una obra histórica, pero que aborda especialmente la historia de la salvación; forma parte de la revelación de Dios a la humanidad y, por tanto, posee un interés religioso perdurable. Muchos de los grandes nombres de la historia de la salvación —y sus hazañas— llenan las páginas de este volumen; con ellos interactúa el Señor, Dios de Israel, atrayéndolos, mandándoles, tolerándolos y castigándolos por haber quebrantado la Alianza establecida con Moisés durante el éxodo de Egipto. Aquí vemos a Josué guiando al pueblo hacia Canaán y repartiendo la tierra entre las doce tribus. Durante los difíciles años del asentamiento, Dios suscita líderes para que actúen como jueces y salvadores: entre ellos, Débora, Gedeón, Jefté y Sansón. También se incluye aquí la hermosa historia de Rut la moabita, antepasada de David. El profeta Samuel accede a la petición del pueblo de tener un rey y unge primero a Saúl y luego a David. El volumen relata el reinado de Salomón —constructor del templo de Jerusalén— y la trayectoria de los reinos de Israel y Judá, junto con la labor de los profetas que se esforzaron por mantener tanto a los reyes como al pueblo fieles a la Ley. Finalmente, Jerusalén cae en el año 587. La monarquía llega a su fin, pero el pueblo de Dios resurgirá pronto de aquel aparente fracaso, y tanto Jerusalén como la Ley serán restauradas.

Al igual que los demás volúmenes de la Edición Estándar de la Biblia de Navarra, preparada por la Facultad de Teología de la Universidad de Navarra, este libro contiene el texto bíblico completo en las versiones *Revised Standard Version* y *Nova Vulgata*, acompañado de amplios comentarios. Dichos comentarios —o notas— ayudan a explicar el sentido doctrinal y práctico del texto sagrado, recurriendo a una rica variedad de fuentes: documentos de la Iglesia, la exégesis de los Padres y Doctores, y las obras de destacados autores espirituales, en particular san Josemaría Escrivá, impulsor del proyecto de la Biblia de Navarra.

The historical books of the Old Testament recount the fortunes of the people of Israel from the conquest of the promised land onwards. Those in Joshua–Kings bring the story up to the point when the independent kingdom of Judah was destroyed by foreign invaders and much of the population deported to Babylon. This is a book about history, but what it deals with particularly is salvation history; it is part of God’s revelation to mankind, and therefore is of enduring religious interest. Many of the great names of salvation history, and their exploits, fill the pages of this volume, and with them the Lord God of Israel engages – wooing, commanding, tolerating, and punishing them for breaking the Covenant made with Moses during the exodus from Egypt. Here we see Joshua leading the people into Canaan and dividing it among the twelve tribes. During the difficult years of settlement, God raises up leaders to act as judges and saviours – Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah, and Samson, among them. Here too is the delightful story of Ruth the Moabitess, ancestress of David. The prophet Samuel accedes to the people’s clamour for a king – anointing, first Saul, then David. The volume reports the reign of Solomon, who built the temple of Jerusalem, and the career of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, with the prophets who strove to keep both kings and people loyal to the Law. Eventually Jerusalem falls in the year 587. The monarchy is at an end but the people of God will soon re-emerge from apparent failure, and Jerusalem and the Law will be restored.

Like the other volumes in the Standard Edition of the Navarre Bible, prepared by Navarre University’s theology faculty, this book contains the full biblical text in the Revised Standard Version and the New Vulgate together with extensive commentaries. The commentaries, or notes, help to explain the doctrinal and practical meaning of the scriptural text, drawing on a rich variety of sources, Church documents, the exegesis of Fathers and Doctors, and the works of prominent spiritual writers, particularly St Josemariá Escrivá, who initiated the Navarre Bible project.
