Mientras que los cinco primeros libros del Antiguo Testamento —el Pentateuco— recogen la Ley de Moisés en forma de mandamientos, los libros sapienciales presentan esa enseñanza bajo la forma de consejos y proverbios. Asimismo, revelan la estrecha relación entre el conocimiento que proviene de la fe y el que se adquiere mediante el razonamiento humano.
El libro de Job adopta la forma de una narración —la historia de un hombre justo que sufre una desgracia tras otra— y, en cierta medida, descorre el velo que envuelve el misterio del sufrimiento. El libro del Eclesiastés («Todo es vanidad»...) ayuda al creyente a valorar las realidades celestiales. Proverbios consta de siete colecciones de sentencias sabias del antiguo Oriente. El libro de la Sabiduría de Salomón, originado probablemente en la comunidad judía de Alejandría (Egipto), establece un diálogo con el mundo de la cultura griega. El Eclesiástico (o Sirácida), escrito por un autor profundamente arraigado en la tradición sapiencial de Israel, fue muy utilizado por los primeros Padres de la Iglesia.
La lectura y la meditación de los libros sapienciales ayudan a preparar la mente y el espíritu humanos para acoger al Señor y comprender sus enseñanzas.

Whereas the first five books of the Old Testament – the Pentateuch – record the Law of Moses in the form of commandments, the Wisdom Books propound that teaching in the form of counsels and proverbs. They also reveal the close connection between knowledge that comes through faith, and knowledge acquired through human reasoning.
The book of Job takes the form of a narrative – the story of an upright man who experiences misfortune after misfortune; to a degree, it lifts the veil that shrouds the mystery of suffering. The book of Ecclesiastes (“All is vanity” …) helps the believer to appreciate the value of things heavenly. Proverbs consists of seven collections of wise sayings from the ancient East. The Wisdom of Solomon, which probably originated in the Jewish community of Alexandria (Egypt), interfaces with the world of Greek culture. Sirach, written by someone steeped in the wisdom tradition of Israel, was much used by the early Fathers of the Church.
Reading and reflecting on the Wisdom Books helps to prepare the human mind and spirit to receive the Lord and to understand his teaching.
Like the other volumes in the Standard Edition of the Navarre Bible, this book contains the full biblical text in the Revised Standard Version and the New Vulgate together with extensive commentaries. The commentaries, which help to explain the doctrinal and practical meaning of the scriptural text, draw on a rich variety of sources—church documents, the exegesis of the Fathers and the Doctors, and the works of prominent spiritual writers, particularly St Josemaría Escrivá, who initiated the Navarre Bible project.
